As a couple, they have set very high standards for students studying jazz and are well worth the attention of listeners. As individuals, they have influenced the lives of many in the jazz world. Ron Newman, a graduate of N. Texas State with a doctorate from MSU, has been on the faculty since the middle 70’s and has been a strong force in the Michigan jazz scene. He developed Jazz Bands I & II from struggling ensembles into award winners and has been a successful instructor of jazz improvisation, arranging, pedagogy, history and a professor of music theory. He has served as president of the Michigan chapter of Jazz Educators, was a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Commissioning Consortium Award and the New York Concert Artists Guild Commission Award. He has been influential in the lives of many music professionals. One that comes to mind is Doug Johnson, a pianist who performed at a recent Summer Solstice Jazz Festival and is very active as a writer and performer on the New York jazz scene. Sunny Wilkinson has 10 fine CD’s to her credit and has performed with the likes of Count Basie, Rob McConnel’s Boss Brass, Bill Watrous and Marvin Stamm. She has been a mentor to many like Tiffany Gridiron who is now a recording artist for Sony as well as Corinne DeVries and Natalie Galey who are presently performers on the New York City Jazz scene. Presently, Sunny is an artist in residence at Hillsdale College where she teaches master classes and clinics in vocal jazz.
