Hill and renowned bandleaders bring original Jazz series debut to Ann Arbor
East Lansing, MI – Having grown up in a musical household, native Michigan composer Gregg Hill uses jazz to create a musical story telling experiences. Building on two volumes of original compositions that span over 30 years, Hill and a talented bench of jazz artists from Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Lansing, will kick off a two-hour journey for the first time in Ann Arbor at 4p.m. on October 1, 2017.
This show features the musical wizardry of two renowned bandleaders, Elden Kelly and Carl Cafangna. Creative in their own right, these masters of music bring their powerhouse bands for a double-header afternoon of live Jazz at the Kerrytown Concert House. Showcasing some of the most talented jazz artists from around the state, this event promises to be inspiring, engaging and entertaining.
Bandleader Elden Kelly is an improviser, band leader, guitarist, composer and singer-songwriter. He is well known for his dynamic blend of classically-influenced jazz and world music. Kelly plays both a nylon string guitar traditionally use in classical music, and the Glissentar, an 11-string fretless guitar which conjures up sounds reminiscent of India, Africa and the Middles East, or “Indo-Turkish bluegrass.”
Kelly’s band members include: Violist Leslie DeShazor, Dwight Adams on trumpet, Damon Warmack on bass and Gayelynn Mckinney on drums.
Bandleader Carl Cafagna is among the Midwest’s most sought-after musicians, a top-level professional vocalist, saxophonist, flutist, clarinetist and drummer, in most musical genres. He has performed and/or recorded with Natalie Cole, Regis Philbin, the Temptations, Johnny Mathis, Don Rickles, the Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey Orchestras, Hot Club of Detroit, the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, Martha Reeves, Marcus Belgrave, Anat Cohen, Bobby Watson, James Carter, John Clayton, Jon Hendricks, Joel Frahm, Howard Alden, Richie Cole, Paul Keller, Johnny Trudell, the late Bob Berg, the late Joan Rivers & the late Mel Torme. Cafangna’s band members include: Sven Anderson on piano, Shannon Wade on bass, Shawn Bell on trombone and Jesse Kramer on drums.
Kerrytown Concert House (KCH) is the house where magic happens in the arts. An intimate 110 seat venue, the historical house’s red door beckons to artists and audience members from around the globe. KCH is home to diverse offerings in every genre and the walls of the house are not only home to music and theatre but also rotating art exhibits.
