Jazz Tuesdays is a weekly event featuring great jazz musicians from all over the state of Michigan. Each week brings in a different guest artist and a new experience.
For our July 18 show we are featuring a special tribute to the master musician Clark Terry. Terry was a swing and bebop trumpeter, a pioneer of the flugelhorn in jazz, composer, educator, and NEA Jazz Masters inductee. Terry’s career in jazz spanned more than 70 years, during which he became one of the most recorded jazz musicians ever, appearing on over 900 recordings. Terry also mentored many musicians including Quincy Jones, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Wynton Marsalis, Pat Metheny, Dianne Reeves, and Terri Lyne Carrington, among thousands of others.
Our bandleader for the tribute is trumpet player Walter Cano. A seasoned performer, Walter has played with Rodney Whitaker, Orquesta Ritmo, the Etienne Charles Big Band, Bobby Carcasses, Allen Vizutti (Jazz Band of America), and the North Sound Jazz Band. He is currently completing a Master’s in Jazz Performance at Michigan State University.
Joining Walter on the bandstand will be Seth Ebersole, reeds, Corey Kendrick, piano, Louie Leager, bass, and Jazz Tuesdays host Jeff Shoup on drums. The host band will play a featured set at 7pm, followed by a jam session until 10!
Jazz Tuesdays is generously supported by the East Lansing Summer Solstice Jazz Festival.
