Jazz Tuesdays with Robbie Smith

October 17, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Jazz Tuesdays is a weekly event featuring great jazz musicians from all over the state of Michigan. Each week brings in a different guest artist and a new experience.

For our October 17 show we welcome multi-instrumentalist Rob Smith. Rob is Director of Jazz Studies at Central Michigan University and holds degrees from both CMU and the University of North Texas. While at UNT he performed with the school’s world-renowned One O’clock Lab Band and can be heard on recordings from 1987-1989. Smith held a faculty position at The University of North Carolina-Greensboro, the Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program (2004-05). He has also taught at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, Canada (1991-93, 1997-98), Michigan State University (1994-97), Mott Community College (1995-97), Interlochen Arts Academy (2000) and Interlochen Jazz Camp (2010), and Central Michigan University (2000-2004).

Smith performs regularly on trumpet and saxophones as a freelance artist and has performed and recorded with several notable groups including: The Woody Herman Jazz Orchestra (worldwide concert tours), The Kirk MacDonald Quintet and the Kirk MacDonald Jazz Orchestra (Toronto), and The Steve Haines Quintet (New York). He performs regularly with the Detroit Jazz Festival Orchestra, the Toledo Jazz Orchestra, and The Masters of Music Big Band. In 2005 he toured with Terri Lyne Carrington, James Genus, Paul Bollenbeck, Munyungo Jackson, Mitch Forman, Nancy Wilson and Dianne Reeves in a tribute to Billie Holiday. This group performed concerts at USC, UCLA, Penn State University, Byham Theater-Pittsburgh, Chicago Symphony Hall, Carnegie Hall and The Kennedy Center. ?

Rob will be joined by the Jazz Tuesdays “house band,” Jim Alfredson on Hammond organ, and host Jeff Shoup on drums. The host band and guest artist play the first set at 7pm, followed by a jam session until 10!

Jazz Tuesdays is generously supported by Gregg Hill Publishing, the East Lansing Summer Solstice Jazz Festival, and INDe Drum Lab.
