Jazz Tuesdays with Ron Brooks and Tad Weed
March 6 @ 7:00 pm - 11:00 pmFree
Jazz Tuesdays is a weekly event featuring great jazz musicians from all over the state of Michigan. Each week brings in a different guest artist and a new experience.
Ron Brooks has been a major player in, and influence on, the Detroit jazz community for several decades. Ron emerged as a player in the 1960s, with piano greats-to-be Bob James and Stanley Cowell. Ron was also a member of the Contemporary Jazz Quintet (led by pianist Kenn Cox), recording for Blue Note Records in 1968 and 1969, and was a founding member of the 1970’s group Mixed Bag, a cooperative group with a fusion touch. That group included the legendary Eddie Russ on keyboards, Larry Nozero on saxes, Jerry Glassel on guitar, and Danny Spencer on drums.
In 1985, Ron opened the Bird of Paradise jazz club in downtown Ann Arbor. His trio became the house band at the club and featured a number of great pianists, including Eddie Russ and Rick Roe. Ron founded the Southeastern Michigan Jazz Association (SEMJA) in the spring of 1987. For it’s 25th anniversary, SEMJA named an award for him.
Ron will be joined powerhouse pianist Tad Weed and Jazz Tuesdays host Jeff Shoup on drums. The host band will play the first set at 7pm, with a jam session to follow until 10.
Jazz Tuesdays is generously supported by Gregg Hill Publishing, the East Lansing Summer Solstice Jazz Festival, and INDe Drum Lab.
