Jazz Tuesdays with the Gene Rebeck Quartet with Special Guest Betty Baxter
September 26, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pmFree
Jazz Tuesdays is a weekly event featuring great jazz musicians from all over the state of Michigan. Each week brings in a different guest artist and a new experience.
This week we feature the great Lansing bassist, Gene Rebeck, with an all star quartet, along with special guest Betty Baxter on vocals.
Gene Rebeck’s career spans back to 1963 when he began gigging in Lansing. Gene has remained a busy player ever since, performing at the well-known Lansing jazz clubs of the day like the Garage, the Rathskeller, Gregory’s, and the Capuccino Cafe.
For nearly 60 years, Betty Baxter has entertained audiences all over Michigan, Philly and L.A. with her satiny voice, and has performed with the likes of Pat Boone, Leroy Vinnegar, Sandy Izenson, Fred Mitchell Jr., Jeff Kressler, Ed Fedewa, Jeff Hall, Fred Knapp, Eddie Russ, Kurt Krahnke, Mike Daniels, and Pete Siers.
Guitarist Gary Allen began working professionally at 18, first on guitar and later as a bass player. He maintained a full time performing career from 1959-1976, traveling the country as a sideman with jazz and show bands, and also with the Les Elgart Orchestra. Gary has recorded with J.R. Monterose, Al Jarreau, Ira Sullivan, Roland Kirk, David Sanborn, Anita O’Day, and John Hendricks. He continues to keep busy performing regularly with several bands.
Saxophonist Wendy Decker played professionally with the Whitey Mitchell Quartet, and has led the “Tres Jazz” group for more than 20 years. He holds the jazz tenor chair with the Jackson Jazz Big Band, and has played with Dr. Stan Gradys’ “Windjammers” group for ten years. He remains an on-call performer for many Midwest jazz groups.
Jazz Tuesdays host Jeff Shoup rounds out the band on drums. The host band and guest artist play the first set at 7pm, followed by a jam session until 10!
Jazz Tuesdays is generously supported by Gregg Hill Publishing, the East Lansing Summer Solstice Jazz Festival, and INDe Drum Lab.
