Jazz Tuesdays with Tony Viviano and Kurt Krahnke
June 26, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pmFree
Jazz Tuesdays is a weekly event featuring great jazz musicians from all over the state of Michigan, and across the country. Each week brings in a different guest artist and a new experience.
For our June 26 show we are excited to welcome back pianist Tony Viviano. Originally from Detroit, Tony studied with legendary figures like Eddie Russ and Gene Parker. He has performed across the US and around the world, on cruise ships, and in the club car on the “American/European Express” luxury train. Tony has been featured in the Mackinaw Island Grand Hotel Orchestra and on the “Bianca” dinner boat sailing along the coastline of Lake Biwa, Japan. Michigan greats he has performed with include Detroit’s George “Saxophone” Benson and Lansing’s own Betty Joplin. He has released two albums, “Lydianosis” and “My Pal Al.”
Bassist Kurt Krahnke is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music, but also studied at the New England Conservatory of Music. He toured the east coast with Ron Levy for two years and then returned to Detroit, where he taught with the Summer Music Program under the direction of Wendell Harrison. Since his return to Michigan, Krahnke has played with Phil Lasley, Jimmy Giuffre, Joe Henderson, Sonny Fortune, Pinetop Perkins, Russell Green, and toured and recorded with Leon Thomas. Krahnke played and toured with the acclaimed JC Heard Orchestra from 1986-89 and received the Best Jazz Bassist award from the Metro-Times. Kurt keeps busy with performances and recording sessions and continues to serve as a mentor for young bassists in the region.
Jazz Tuesdays host Jeff Shoup rounds out the trio on drums. The host band will play the first set at 7pm, followed by a jam session until 10.
Jazz Tuesdays is generously supported by Gregg Hill Publishing, the East Lansing Summer Solstice Jazz Festival, and INDe Drum Lab.
